Terms and Statistics

General Information & Statistics:

Explosive Growth - The 2006 Census Report indicated that Internet access had almost doubled between 2001 and 2006.

6.5 million Australians (individuals and companies) have internet access at home or work, and now spend in excess of $11.7 billion dollars a year (ABS 2009) in online purchases.

Q. What slice of that pie did you receive into your business last Financial Year?

These numbers tell the story of the continuous rise of the internet as a market force in Australia. These statistics tell us that Australians are demonstrating an increasing willingness to purchase their goods and services online. In fact, Australia is now the third highest country in terms of e-commerce usage.

Market Research Company, AC Nielsen's Online Consumer Press Release gives this data:

FACT: AC Nielsen’s Online Consumer Report states that annual online spending reached a record high with total online spending in Australia totaling $11.7 billion in the 12 months to June 2009, or around $1,900 annually per shopper.

“Today, with the views of approximately 23,000 regular Internet users on their online purchasing behaviours and attitudes, spend and preferred online retailers and payment methods, this report found that the number of consumers shopping on the Internet had jumped by 13 percent in the past 12 months and, of these shoppers, over half (51%) had made repeat purchases.”

With all these numbers, this represents less than 5% of the total population making purchases online at the start of 2010. The real opportunity that presents itself if with the next statistics, that between now and the end of 2013, all estimates expect an increase to well over 10% of customers across the general marketplace turning their attention online to complete their sale.

Q. What do you plan to do with this information to capture your slice of this Sales Pie?

Q. Ever wondered how and why your competitor is above you in Google, or why they’ve got a website and you don’t?

What do these things mean, in simple ‘normal’ person language?

In this section, we have put together the basic concepts of having your website ‘found’ on the internet by customers searching for information, products and services within your field or industry. This is by no means an exhaustive list, but it’s certainly a place to start to better understand some of the words and phrases you might have heard but don’t really understand. If after looking through some of these details below you would like some more information or wish to ask some questions about how your website could be ‘turned on’ in the online marketplace, Contact Us and we’ll help you in any way we can.

Organic vs Sponsored Optimisation (visual):

Organic Listings (1-3 above) are a free source for the customer to go directly to the website of the search term listed in Google. When a potential customer searches Google with a specific or general term, then will have this display pop-up for them. When they click on the link they are taken directly to a landing page within the website. Getting higher on page 1 can take time, however there are simple methods to help make this happen sooner. It is also dependant upon how your website has been built (hopefully with sales in mind, or just set up as an expensive ‘business card’ or ‘Information’ site).

A diversified approach to being ‘found’ is to optimise your website so that it gets found ‘organically’ (free) as well as using the other words from your industry to attract the attention of your customers, both new and existing. In order to achieve a higher view on Page 1 on search engines like Google, the only method is a paid advertising campaign, or something called sponsored Link or Pay Per Click (PPC) optimisation.

Sponsored Link or Pay Per Click (PPC) Advertising (4-5 above) is the most effective way to manage how your business is seen on the internet. A simple process of choosing key words from your business, industry or from the customer’s viewpoint. Words such as your product, your brands, general phrases that are relevant or even your competitors name are all effective places to start accumulating this ‘word bank’ and be there front and centre when the customer starts searching.

Without it, you’ll never be seen. The question here is “How many people searched onlne in Australia last month for information, products or services relating to your business.”

The answer is simple: We can tell you, and we can show you clearly and simply what you need to do to change that right now.

Affiliate Campaigns are lead generating alliances within the IT Sales industry that support online sales platforms of business. Set up mainly to provide sales direct to your site by online sales people, Affiliate Marketers promote your product/service for you online through their respective network channels, forwarding customers directly to your site to complete the transaction, for which you pay them a commission for the completed sale or transaction.

This happens 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 52 weeks a year and is now seen as the most active and dynamic growth area in sales in the US since 2008.

It’s worth noting that if they don’t sell anything, they don’t make anything, so where’s the risk.

The only risk is the Missed opportunity to your business through not utilising the machine, that is the internet, to stimulate the ‘passive’ sales function of your business.

Impressions is the number of times your website or sponsored link gets seen as a display on the Google search page. It doesn’t mean that someone has then clicked your link, it purely means that your add or page has been ‘able’ to be seen on the full page with other competitor sites or ads.

A Hit is the number of times your advertisement or organic listing has been actually ‘clicked’ or ‘hit’ by the customer, who is taken directly to a specific landing page on your website.

For example: A customer searches for a specific product brand or model number into Google. You have your website optimisated well and you also have a PPC campaign running with many key words relating to your business, product, service or range offered. Your site gets ‘clicked/hit’ and the customer is taken directly to the product requested that you have within your online catalogue. They are then free to choose to gather further information or perhaps you’ve given them the opportunity to complete this transaction online, right now. Sounds too simple, right? It is!

Conversion Rate relates to the number of Impressions or Hits that come to your business, and how many of these turn into completed sales. With many business owners that we have surveryed and spoken to directly indicate to us that their conversion rate of Number of Hits vs Number of Sales falls anywhere between 0.55 and 0.75 of 1%. Now, this mightn’t seem like a high conversion rate and to be honest, it’s not, it’s just average.

An example: Australia’s leading online kitchenware and cookware retailer, Kitchen Discounts (www.kitchendiscounts.com.au) is a very powerful example of successful webswite optimisation. They enjoy a Conversion Rate 6-8 times the market average for kitchenware and cookware related products through applying basic optimisation practices on a daily basis. They get HIT more than any of their competition (exact stats confidential), and it’s growing. All from selling lots of Jamie Oliver pots and pans, and potato peelers. Not bad, hey!

Question for You: What are you selling online? If Kitchen Discounts can do it, can you? Really, why can’t you?

Being very clear and precise with regards to statistics ensures that we can keep on top of developments, industry trends, changing customer needs, media campaigns and more, to quickly and accurately respond to the changing marketplace to capture more of the market share.
